What makes a Serving?
Five to nine servings of fruits and veggies do not have to be taken at one go. So, don't worry as to how to achieve the target of accomplishing the numbers of servings. 5-9 servings take into account all the servings of fruits and veggies taken by an individual during the entire day, irrespective of their form -- raw, cooked, frozen, dried, or in the form of juice.
One serving size is defined as:
- Drink one glass of delicious fruit juice either at home or in school and youre on your way to 5-a-day.
- 1/2 cup of cooked vegetables equals one serving of your 5-a-day.
- One medium fruit counts as one serving of your 5-a-day.
- A whole carrot/ tomato/cucumber/radish counts as one serving.
- A handful of dry fruits makes one serving of your 5-a-day
- One cup of salad counts as one serving. A medium salad is 2 servings and a large salad makes 3 servings.
Remember: Eating 5-a-day is the magic rule, more is okay... but less is uncool!
Smart ways to add fruits and veggies to your diet
- Enriched cereal with milk topped with fruits like apple, plums, raisins etc.
- Drink fruit juice instead of aerated / synthetic beverages.
- Snack on fruit chaat or fruit mix or dried fruit instead of sweets, chocolates and cakes.
- Salads should accompany every meal.
- Fruit to be used as desserts, smoothies, etc.
- Prepare fruit juice fizz from ahalf and half mixture of Real fruit juice and soda.
